My husband had a vasectomy last week (8 days ago). Yesterday, we had sex for the first time since the procedure and unfortunately forgot to use alternate protection. What are my chances of becoming pregnant (I am half way between my menstrual cycles, having had my last menstruation 2 weeks ago)?
Dr. Edward KarpmanMost men will remain fertile for up to 6-8 weeks or 24 ejaculates after a vasectomy since sperm are still present in the downstream portions of the vas deferens. It is important to continue using some type of birth control until the patient has demonstrated two semen samples absent of any sperm to prevent an unwanted pregnancy.
Unfortunately, the risk of pregnancy is unchanged until the patient has demonstrated azoospermia (absent sperm) in the ejaculate. Assuming that a woman has a normal ovulatory cycle, two weeks after her last menstrual period puts her in the midst of ovulation when the risk of pregnancy is highest. The earliest a couple can know whether they are pregnant or not is around the time of the following expected menstrual cycle. A commercially available pregnancy test or beta-hCG level done in your physician’s office can determine whether or not the female partner is pregnant.
