I had my vasectomy between 4 and 4 1/2 years ago. I was given the all clear by the doctor, and have had no problems since then. My question is is there a certain period of time after a vasectomy in which a recanalization will have no chance of happening?

    Dr. Edward Karpman

The probability of having re-canalization of a successful vasectomy 4 years after the procedure is extremely low. Some of the largest studies looking at long term vasectomy failure report a rate of 0.46% to 0.7%. This data supports the durability and long-term effectiveness of vasectomy as a primary form of birth control. If there is any concern about the patency of the vas deferens after a vasectomy, most physicians will perform a follow-up semen analysis regardless of the time interval after your vasectomy.
