Is it possible that once a vasectomy has been performed, and an individual has been given the all clear (zero sperm count), that a pregnancy can still occur, and after a further test, the individual in question can still be given a further zero sperm count? (A year after having the procedure performed, and having intercourse on at least 5 occasions a week).
A successful vasectomy is extremely unlikely to cause a pregnancy, especially after repeated semen analyses confirming the absence of sperm before and after the supposed pregnancy. Certain types of vasectomy procedures, such as the VasClip, have been shown to have a higher than acceptable failure rate. In one study, up to 25% of patients had re-canalization of the vas deferens. Standard vasectomy procedures that fail usually show persistent motile or non-motile sperm in the ejaculate. These patients never have complete clearance of sperm from the ejaculate. It is important that a pelleted sample of the ejaculate is evaluated as 8% of men with presumed azoospermia (absence of sperm) will be found to have sperm using this technique.
