I was wondering this due to the fact that I still get aroused allot. Its been 4 days after my surgery and I have the feelings of “blue balls” or pelvic congestion in my scrotum. Is there a way to tell pelvic congestion from normal post surgery swelling?
Dr. Edward KarpmanArousal after a vasectomy is normal. Vasectomy does not have any noticeable effect on a man’s libido, erections, semen volume or orgasm. A sense of fullness in the scrotum only 4 days after a vasectomy is normal. This may be related to some post-operative swelling which is normal. However, if the swelling is significant and associated with discoloration of the scrotum this can represent a problem such as a hematoma. The concept of “Blue Balls” has never really been demonstrated medically and can be attributed to various sensations that men have in their scrotum and pelvic area. It is a slang term used in the context when a man has not ejaculated for a prolonged period of time or when a man is sexually aroused but unable to orgasm/ejaculate. Most of a man’s ejaculate comes from the seminal vesicles and prostate (95%) and the relief a man feels after ejaculation is likely attributed to relieving the fluid from these organs. This process is unaffected by a vasectomy. Some “authorities” on this subject believe that “Blue Balls” are associated with epididymal hypertension as a result of increased blood flow to the genital organs during sexual arousal that is relieved with orgasm. If this is the case, then occluding the vas deferens shouldn’t have any impact on the blood circulation of the genital organs. A search of the medical literature revealed only one case report on the subject of “Blue Balls”.
Nevertheless, “Blue Balls” have never been associated with any noticeable differences such as swelling in the scrotal area. Many men will have a heightened awareness of their pelvic region after any surgical procedure in this area. Many symptoms and sensations that were oftentimes overlooked will become more apparent afterwards. Careful evaluation and reassurance from the surgeon can alleviate many of the patient’s concerns.
