What is the appropriate amount of time to wait after the procedure before having intercourse?
Dr. Edward KarpmanUnfortunately, there is no right answer for this question. Every urologist that I have ever spoken with regarding this issue has given me a different answer that ranges anywhere from 2 days to 2 weeks. In my own practice I usually tell my patients to refrain from sexual intercourse for at least 2 days after the procedure. This is fair since most people are not thinking about sexual intercourse so soon after the procedure and it allows an adequate time for healing of the incisions. I tell them to resume sexual activity once they are feeling up to it.
In my experience, most people resume sexual activity no longer than one week after their vasectomy. It is important to remind every patient that they are not immediately sterile after their vasectomy and should continue to use whatever form of contraception they were using prior to the procedure and before confirming their sterility/fertility status. Parenthetically, many of my patients have told me that their sexual experience has improved after their vasectomy, since they are no longer worried about having an unwanted pregnancy and can fully enjoy the moment.
