I had a vasectomy 2 weeks ago today, 07/06/2007. Since about mid-week the first week, I have had a hematoma in the left side of my scrotum. The left side was especially hard for the doctor to do. He had quite a bit of trouble getting a hold of the vas. So to begin with, I probably should have taken more time off work then the normal recommended few days. But, it is to late for should haves. It causes a small amount of pain when touched, but other then that, it’s mainly the discomfort of knowing it’s there.

My question is, is there more that I could be doing to speed up it’s going away? I am taking a anti-inflammatory and applying warmth to it frequently throughout the day as the doctor recommended. Is there anything else I could be doing? Thanks for any and all information and help.

Hematoma is an unfortunate and uncommon complication after a vasectomy. Once the hematoma has formed there is not much that can be done to expedite the process of resolution. Anti-inflammatories and warm soaks are recommended. A scrotal support or some tight underwear is also useful as this minimizes pulling on the scrotum that can occur with a large hematoma. The best recommendation for any patient is to avoid any strenuous activity that can potentially make it worse.
