I was 35 years old when I got the surgery. I’m single and have not been married. I’m clear about how I want to live my life and I conveyed that to the doctor with enough certainty that he didn’t try to second guess me. My doctor is a Urologist in private practice – Robert F. Graves, MD, FACS who has since moved to a small community in western Nebraska “where there is no managed care” – his words.
Day of the vasectomy
Today I got a vasectomy. It was really scary for me, especially when I walked into the first room in the office and saw the table. I was shaken up. The procedure itself really wasn’t too bad. First, he sprayed my genitals with some kind of alcohol solution, and then he started sticking me with the needle. When it first went in it was pretty intense. He stuck me with it a bunch of times and the numbness started working immediately and he went right to work. It was a no-scalpel procedure. I couldn’t feel anything in the immediate area but I definitely knew something was going on there. My body was panicking. I could hear the snapping and cutting. I could feel the pulling and then I could smell the burning flesh. The blood was rushing from my head and I thought I was going to pass out so I started breathing heavier to increase the oxygen to my brain. This helped but then I started getting tetnea in my hands, tingling, and taught. I was having a really hard time, but the doctor was very calm and chatty the whole time, and this really helped. The whole thing didn’t take very long; it could have been as short as 12 minutes or as long as 30. I don’t have any idea but it seemed to go fairly quick. I managed not to pass out, throw up, or freak out which was really good.
After we were done and Dr. Graves left the room, I inspected the tray where he left his tools and such and I could see the two little pieces of vas deferens that he removed. They were only 1/4″ to 3/8″ long and a little larger than 1/16″ wide. Wow. There it was. After he removed those pieces from me, he cauterized the ends, sewed them up, and then buried the one end back into the sheath and then sewed that up because they will easily grow back together otherwise. I’d say he did a really good job. I don’t feel really uncomfortable right now and it’s been over 12 hours since the operation.
I paid him $400 cash and that will include the follow-up lab work. I have another appointment to return a sperm sample in 7 weeks. They’ll check to make sure there’s no live sperm in it. Jeff drove me there and back and when I got home slept all day and then got on the computer so I’ve really been off my feet and I only put frozen peas on the spot for 35 minutes when I got home and I have reapplied it since, nor have I taken any meds. I’m taking it really easy and I think I’m doing really well. I feel pretty good considering. I’m taking the rest of the week off to rest so hopefully, I get back to work in full swing.
Well, my life course has certainly been a little bit more firmly established with today’s surgery. Irreversible for life. No children. Wow. It’s a relief. Now I can really enjoy the pleasures of a woman without any of the hassles of contraception.
Recovery progress
So, with every day I got better and better. I had a lot of discomforts and aching in my balls. Any pressure or friction was uncomfortable. But, each day, the discomfort lessened. I had to walk so slowly! And move so slowly. It was really weird to slow down like that. I felt like an old man! I really didn’t do anything for three days except stay in bed and work on the computer. Now, I’m feeling much better but yesterday started with a bad headache that just got worse and today it’s been threatening to re-emerge but it seems to be keeping at bay. The first time I jerked off on the 27th, I was really tentative. First of all, too much pounding down there was intimidating. But I got a pretty good result. On the 30th, I had a major blast sensation. It was a real relief to know that the works were working! So, I’ve pretty much jerked off every day since then and everything is working fine.
I received no medication beforehand – local anesthesia only – and used nothing afterward except ice. The $400 price (I deal in cash whenever I can) was a few hundred less than the other local docs who perform the no-scalpel technique and one of the reasons for this was because my doctor has his own microscope. He didn’t need some high priced lab to put my ejaculate on a slide magnified at x10 in order to see that there were no sperm! Incidentally, any of you guys who live near a University might save a few bucks if you’re able to sneak your ejaculate into a school lab and look at it yourself under the microscope – you know what sperm looks like, and if you don’t see any – it’s REALLY blank – then you’re clean!
I kept telling myself I had to clean out the works as quickly as possible – as it was a medical necessity to get a zero count! 🙂 I was all clear on the second check – 6/5/00 – ten weeks later. As an additional note, I must add that I would experience quite a lot of pain in the tubes just above the testes from the pressure of masturbation – I did it anyway. I could feel hard little knots in the tubes and they were very tender to the touch. In the fall, I got the usual head/chest cold illness and that process cleared my whole body out – as well as clearing up the knots and tenderness in my tubes! I always work to support my body when it’s cleaning itself out with a cold – I never see this process as an illness where I want to suppress the symptoms with OTC meds – I took a lot of vitamins, C, minerals, zinc, and cleansing herbs like Chaparral, Echinacea, Goldenseal, Osha Root. And it’s all still fine today!
