I just had a vasectomy two days ago. I did a lot of reading and web-surfing beforehand, so I was ready.
My doctor insisted that I take 5mg of Valium an hour before the procedure – great advice. I was only mildly agitated beforehand. Not really nervous. The Novocain injection was only mildly uncomfortable.
On the right side was a piece of cake. The doctor had difficulty locating the vas on the left and beat me up pretty good looking for it. When he finally found it, it turned out that he had failed to numb it. I complained of a pinching sensation when he put the left vas in the clamp. He reassured me that I wasn’t feeling anything. When he applied the electro-cautery to the vas I reassured him that he was killing me! He apologized and injected some Novocain into the vas and the rest of the procedure went smoothly.
I kept ice on my scrotum for the next 48 hours almost nonstop. Best thing I did. I had no swelling and virtually no pain. Two days later I was fine. On a scale of 1-10, the worst pain at any time was probably a 3. It just didn’t hurt that bad.
Looking back, even when I could feel the vas being burned, it wasn’t that bad. It’s more of a mental thing than a physical thing. I wouldn’t hesitate to do it again if necessary.
